ndb clusters

Monday, July 31st, 2006

So, MySQL AB has a huge chunk of new documentation on the NDB API.

Short Story: Semi-sleepycat like API available, but its replicated/clustered and everything magically. [Example]

Brian Aker was at the memcached BOF at OSCON, saying how it is way cool, and could be used in some places to replace memcached.

But, what I haven’t found is anyone talking about using the ndbclient API in large scary production environments. Is there anyone out there really hammering it?

Infact, a Google Search for “ndbclient” only returns 111 results right now, none of which look too great.

It seems like it could be a great solution instead of using application level partitioning and replicating Berkeley DB in some use cases. I don’t mind being given a low level API and having to build my application level logic on top… It’s how Sleepycat has worked for 20 years.

My corn has grown. This picture was actually last week, and it sat on my camera for awhile.

upcoming: AIRWeb 2006

On August 10th, I’ll be on the panel about Blog Spam for AIRWeb 2006, which is part of SIGIR 2006 at the UW Campus in Seattle.

I think my perspective will be signifigantly different from the other panelists; Because Bloglines has a signifigant enough user base, we know what people actually read, and people generally don’t subscribe to Spam Feeds. The next question will be of course, how does Bloglines know if it is a real human subscribing to a feed….

Too bad the Mariners are away in Texas when I’ll be there.

I found this cool post explaining my mod_flvx, but I haven’t a clue what they are really saying.

I tried using BableFish, but the first line gave me some horrible Bable:

oEDBccOP ABOUT UCHPEN VMPZE Paul Querna OF CHSHCHMPTSYM OF UPVUFCHEOOSHCHK NPDKHMSH L apache of 2 DMS RPFPLPCHPK RETEDBYUY Flash OF CHYDEP.

So, I its something like ‘About’, My Name, Apache 2, and Flash.

Could someone who knows Russian post a mini-summary of what the article is saying?

EDIT: wrowe figured out that their website was sending the wrong encoding, and this is causing BableFish to fail on the whole-webpage conversion. If I paste it in by paragraph I am able to translate it.

Trying to stream Flash Video?

Tired of using PHP?

I wrote mod_flvx to do all of the streaming stuff via an apache module.

To configure, add AddHandler flv-stream .flv to your httpd config.

thats all.

EDIT: Wiki page explaining all of the encoding and flash player needs for using mod_flvx.

warzone^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H holiday

Up in Deer Park, it sounded like a war zone last night.

Here are videos of two of the sparkler bombs we constructed:

The above has better sound, but the camera’s auto-focus makes it all blurry.

200607052044

This one on the other hand, has better focus, but no one is screaming.

Both of these were fired after the city did its own 20 minute fireworks show. (I haven’t been able to find any good photos of those) There aren’t many places in America left like Deer Park.

Towards the end of the evening, there was a beautiful lightning storm in Spokane:

Doug, always working hard.

P1010004.JPG

David Dederer, formally from Presidents of the United States of America, was one of the most interesting talks this morning. He explained how artists really make money, and all the points where the record companies take a cut.

P1010006.JPG

Sen. John Edwards. Net Neutrality and the lack of balls in the democratic party was discussed.

It was okay, but, I’m holding my breath until real action is taken. Search on John Edwards.

A blurred picture of the just launched BlueDot. I thought it was pretty stupid, and the blue balls were just a ‘we have VC money to waste’ statement to me. Search for BlueDot.

Oh yeah, and Doug, Robyn, and I got up on stage for 30 minutes and talked about the ‘next big idea’ for aggregators. I think the session went really well. We actually got some clapping, and we gave away a huge bottle of wine.

Laughing Squid has a huge set of photos posted.

Time for bed. Day Two starts early tomorrow.
